Fairfax, Va. (WUSA)--They're certainly an unusual cast of characters. One is an auto shop junkie, another studies international dance with an Asian flavor, and believe it or not a few more are in the school orchestra. Head Coach Scott Gordon knows his team doesn't fit the stereotype of athletic studs.

"Some of the most successful ones you wouldn't have a clue," says Gordon. And that's just fine with him.

"They are all superior endurance athletes everyone of them from novice to varsity."

Gordon is talking about his Fairfax High School Rowing Team, who by the way, know a little about bringing home the hardware. His 3rd Varsity boat captured the Ted Phoenix Regatta and his 1st Varsity Men's team placed second at the Virginia State Championships.

Although Gordon's team doesn't fit most people's stereotype of dominant athletes they are. Each day after school his group travels to Sandy Run in northern virginia, and its there that they transform from some of the most diverse individuals into a championship level team.

"We have people from all aspects, but i don't know we all mesh together and it works," says Senior Justin DeGaetano.

"It takes a special individual," says Gordon. "Take a girl like Laura Trieber (coxswain), here's a young lady who is steering a $30,000 boat, I'm not letting her drive my $30,000 car (smiling) but here she is steering a $30,000 boat and responsible for its safety."

"We're using some pretty expensive equipment so that comes with alot of responsibilities," says Treiber.

Its might be cliche' but in Fairfax's case its true, you can't judge a book, or athletes, by their covers. They might just surprise you.
