COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA) -- Two fishermen discovered the body of what appeared to be a newborn at Lake Artemesia just before 3 p.m. Sunday. The lake is north of the College Park Airport near the Metrorail tracks in the 8200 block of 55th Avenue.
Joseph Dean said he saw a trash bag in the lake and picked it up, as he usually does when he sees litter. Dean and Will Perdue looked in the bag and found the body of an infant girl.
Prince George's County homicide detectives are leading the investigation. Cpl. Erica Johnson of the Prince George's County Police Department is asking for the public's help in finding the mother.
Detectives are hoping an autopsy will determine how the child died.
The park around the lake was closed and remained shut through the evening.
