WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- At 7:30 this morning, it looked like a losing battle. Connecticut and Pennsylvania Avenues, at the height of the snow storm, looked treacherous.
By mid morning, all major roads in the District were clear and many residential streets had seen a salt truck or plow at least once.
Mapleview Place in Southeast is a steep hill, but there was a passable center lane. Same for other steep arteries in that area.
Beginning at 2 p.m., the Department of Public Works was preparing its small and mid-sized vehicles from its W street lot in Northeast to go into residential areas to salt and plow. Unfortunately, what's left will freeze up overnight causing bigger problems in the morning.
Residents on Irving Street N.W. were giving the city good grades for its snow removal efforts.
At Stoddert elementary school, parents said the decision to open school on a two hour delay was the right call.
