WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA)-- Unemployment levels are at their highest in years and despite the newly-passed economic stimulus plan, the turnaround isn't likely to be swift. For many, the job search begins to take a huge personal toll and one DC resident turned to a "Life Coach" for help.

Zach Whales has been out of work for 6 months and says that he's lost his way in the search for a new job.

Zack says, "I feel like there's chaos to the whole thing. I don't know which path or lead to really pursue."

DC life coach Bill Pullen says there's a way to bring order to that chaos, even when navigating life crises like unemployment.

Bill says, "First thing I tell my clients is to have some structure. Get out of bed at a regular time every day, take a shower, eat regular meals and create a routine."

Next on Bill's list, don't sit back and wait for the phone to ring. He says do something every day that moves you toward your goal.

"Schedule a coffee, a lunch, make sure that you are doing something every day related to your job search."

Zack says for him, job rejections are the most difficult.

"I was actually over-qualified for you guys and you rejected me. It knocks your legs out from under," says Zack.

Bill says one way to counter that feeling of rejection is to actively seek out things that make you feel useful.

He says, "Go out and volunteer. A lot of organizations needs a lot of help right now. Volunteering is a good way to feel better about yourself."

Bill says the key is to take advantage of this extra time so that when you do return to work your life is in better shape. He says, "Now is the chance to develop good habits so that you have laid the habit and created some routine. You can carry those things into that new job."

Bill has one final tip. He says keep a journal so that you can look back and see the progress you are making. It will help with self-esteem and with keeping him focused.

Update on Zach:

Since shooting the story, Zack Whales got offered a position as an online and communications consultant for the Humanitarian Group, United Palestinian Appeal.
