LEESBURG, Va. (WUSA) -- A new bulletin is just out from police in their hunt for whoever shot a local attorney in the heart of historic Leesburg.
Investigators suspect the attacker or attackers used a pay phone in front of the Safeway on Catoctin Circle between 5 and 6 on Monday night, just before shooting Todd Sanders. They're asking for anyone who may have seen the man to call them.
Police have about a half a dozen dogs out searching the neighborhood looking for clues.
Sanders was working late in his office Monday when neighbors reported hearing a gunshot. Police say he was hit in the neck and back of the head, either by shrapnel, flying glass, or the round itself. It's not clear where the round came from.
Sanders was able to run outside and flag down a good samaritan, who rushed him to the hospital. His sister tells 9News Now that he's going to be ok.
He's out of the hospital and has talked for a second time with detectives.
Sanders is a former prosecutor and long-time defense attorney. He represented Michelle Davidson, the mother who held her doctor hostage, accusing him of causing her baby's birth defects.
Michelle Davidson's husband, Nathan, says the lawyer had always gone out of his way to help the family.
Police are hoping Sanders can help them track down whoever attacked him But Lt. Wes Thompson says, at this point, Sanders is just hurt and bewildered.
Investigators say they plan to look back at people Sanders has prosecuted, and people he's defended, to try and figure out who might have had it out for him.
