UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA) -- Would you like to know about emergency services that aren't available in your community because of furloughs underway for Prince George's County employees?
9NEWS NOW has obtained the schedule for paramedic crews that will be furloughed for 80-hours each between now and June of next year.
According to the schedule sent to department employees on Tuesday, as many as three of the county's 12 medic units will be out of service for eight hours each during any 24-hour period. The furloughs started last Sunday.
Among the medic units that has not been available for eight-hour stretches over the last four days is the busiest medic unit in the county, Medic 829 in Silver Hill. Medic 829 handled more than 6,000 calls in 2007. Medic 829 joined medic units from College Park and Brandywine during the first four days of furloughs.
Medic 829 and each of the 11 other paramedic units are on the schedule to be without staffing on 40 different dates between now and June 14. The medic units in the list below are grouped by those on the same furlough schedule. If you click on the medic number you will get a map of the medic's location.
While this schedule was not officially released, it has been verified as being accurate as of Wednesday, October 1, 2008 by Prince George's County officials.
Public Safety Director Vernon Herron tells 9NEWS NOW the furloughs were a last resort. He calls them a "bitter pill to swallow".
Herron believes as difficult as it is to take medic units off the street, the other option would be to fire county employees in an effort to make up the budget deficit.
Herron says during furlough days attempts are being made to furlough medic units during non-peak hours. Herron says the furlough schedules were done in a way to have the least impact on public safety and that they are subject to change as conditions warrant.
The Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department says medic supervisors, who are themselves trained paramedics, will attempt to respond on calls in areas where medic crews are on furlough.
