WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The streets of D.C. will no doubt get quiet in a couple of hours. Furloughed employees will begin to go home and tourists might even find its worth staying home, too.
It was a moment captured by many clicks of the camera and one we haven't seen in 17 years: heavy equipment bringing in barricades to shut down the Lincoln Memorial. It's a sign of the government shutdown. All national parks are closed by some of the very people who will be off the job because of the congressional inaction.
Tourists snap pictures standing behind the barricade.
Federal workers commuted to their jobs Monday morning only to return home.
Essential government personnel will remain working throughout the shutdown, some receiving IOU's. School teachers, police officers, firefighters, and public health workers are still on the job.
