(WUSA9) -- Prince William County Animal Shelter officials say a young dog was thrown from a balcony and now needs surgery that costs $2,600.
Officials say Dexter, a 3-month-old Border Collie mixed breed, was thrown off an apartment balcony last Thursday night. Dexter's leg was fractured in four places, according to officials. An official tells us several pins were inserted into his leg.
According to an official, a Prince William County resident found Dexter in a nearby county and brought him to the animal shelter in Prince William County.
The official says The Prince William County Humane Society is paying for the surgery but the society and the shelter are asking for donations to cover the cost.
The animal shelter asked its Facebook fans to donate to the PAWS fund through Prince William Humane Society to help pay for Dexter's surgery. Officials wrote, "All the money they raise comes directly back to our Shelter."

An official says Dexter is doing well and is expected to have a full recovery.
On August 30, Dexter was adopted, after interviews with 15 people who were interested. He will move into his new home on Saturday. The couple who adopted Dexter are from Woodbridge. They had a dog from a previous adoption who recently died.
"He is in great shape," she said. "He's a true puppy. He likes to chew everything. He would like to run around like a puppy, but he needs to be in a crate resting."
The case is still being investigated and no one has been charged with anything at this point, officials said.
