WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A 54-year-old man caring for his sick father is dead. Police say he shot his 70-year-old father, then himself in what appears to be an attempted murder suicide.
Police say the men were found shot in the 500 block of Quincy St. NW at approximately 6 a.m. Thursday. The crime scene stretches from inside the family home to the back alley.
Residents in the tight-knit Petworth neighborhood are puzzled that a seemingly happy, friendly family is at the center of an attempted murder suicide.
Long time neighbor Shirley White says the 70-year-old is the wheelchair bound father of the 54-year-old. "I think he got three sons and a daughter, and he put them out and then he let them back in because he got sick and somebody had to take care of him," said White.
Neighbors describe the family as peaceful and friendly, but do tell us police have been called to the home before.
Neighbor Kenji Jasper says it appears extended family often gathered at the house and police responded to a noise disturbance at least once. "No violence complaints. I've never really seen them argue that much. So I'm really shocked. Hope to find out what happened," Jasper told us.
