WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A car drove off the road crashing into the sidewalk, then a tree, killing a 72-year-old woman on Tuesday morning, police said.
Catherine Cecelia Proctor, of Northeast, DC, was pronounced dead at the hospital after the accident.
Police say her car, a 2009 Kia Optima jumped the curb, crashed into a newspaper dispenser, traveled past the intersection and crashed into a tree, police said.
It happened at around 7:20 a.m. at the 4400 Block of 12th Street, NE, police said.
"The vehicle mounted the northwest curb and collided with a newspaper dispenser and a large tree. The vehicle then re-entered the roadway, continued southbound across the intersection of Varnum Street, mounted the west curb, and collided head on with a large tree located in the 4300 block of 12th Street NE," police said in a news release.
DC Police are still investigating the crash.
