WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- If your air bag has been replaced in the past 3 years, this warning could apply to you.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Wednesday morning in a press release that "NHTSA has become aware of a problem involving the sale of counterfeit air bags for use as replacement parts in vehicles that have been involved in a crash." The airbags reportedly look almost identical to the original airbags but testing of the airbags "showed consistent malfunctioning ranging from non-deployment of the air bag to the expulsion of metal shrapnel during deployment."

The administration says it's not aware of any deaths or injuries due to the malfunctions.

NHTSA says the problem "affects less than 0.1 percent of the U.S. vehicle fleet" and only applies to vehicles that have had their airbags replaced in the past three years by a repair shop not affiliated with a new car dealership. Officials also say you could also be affected by this problem if you bought a used car that may have deployed an airbag before you bought it, you have a car with a title branded salvage, rebuilt or reconstructed or you bought replacement air bags from eBay or "other non-certified sources" for a very low price.
If you think you may have one of these cars, call your car manufacturers call center to have your auto manufacturer inspected. A list of call centers and more information is available at www.SaferCar.gov.
According to NHTSA, it's working with other government agencies to get more information on the counterfeit air bags and how to stop them from being bought and installed in cars.
