(WUSA) -- Cosmetic procedures aren't just for women any more. Men are turning to doctors to ditch the razor and get out the door faster in the morning.

More men are going under the laser, seeking permanent hair removal.

Dr.Yolanda Holmes of Washington DC Dermatology says, "Men have to shave on a daily basis, and most of them do. They shave their beard areas. Laser hair removal makes it more convenient for them."

WUSA 9 Digital Executive Producer Manny Fantis agreed to see what a low level laser felt like.

The doctor explains that first, a gel is applied to cool and protect the skin. Then, she gently lasers over the skin

"It feels cold, more than anything" says Fantis.

Holmes explains, "The tip of the laser's cold, because it cools the skin as you treat it."

Now, men are asking for a specific type of hair removal

"Many men are getting the beard areas treated," says Holmes."I also have some patients that are getting backs treated as well."

There's no embarrassing factor for men anymore. It may seem like a woman's procedure, but that's not the case.

"Laser hair removal is for both men and woman," say the doctor. "Anyone who suffers from hairy areas can be treated with laser hair removal."

More men are turning to doctors to improve their appearances in other ways. The "American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery" says male cosmetic procedures are up 121 percent since 1997.
