WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) - DC Mayor Vincent Gray told a DC Council Budget hearing that he would put speed and red light cameras on every corner if he had the resources.
The Mayor was defending his budget proposal which calls for spending about five million dollars to generate about 30 million more dollars in fines from electronic red light and speed cameras.
Triple A Mid Atlantic is fighting the mayor, saying the new proposal proves the cameras are about increasing revenues and not safety as the Mayor, Police Chief and others contend.
Suburban jurisdictions are also using the cameras; but the state of Maryland has capped tickets at 40 dollars. and local jurisdictions cannot generate more than ten percent of their budget revenues from electronic cameras.
Anything above ten percent must be sent to the state.
