ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (AP) - Former U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode says he's running for president.

Media outlets report the former six-term congressman from Rocky Mount, Va. will be running as a Constitution Party candidate.

Goode served in the state legislature and was elected to Congress as a Democrat before becoming an independent and later a Republican.

In 2007, he lost his seat to former Democratic Rep. Tom Perriello.

Perriello says he's focused on balancing the budget and limited government. He acknowledges that his likelihood of winning is small, but he says his campaign is more about a message than winning.

He says a grass-roots campaign instead of one funded by political action committees and large donations from individuals is needed.

Goode's platform also includes securing the border and term limits.
