Woman sexually assaulted near Gainesville shopping center

GAINESVILLE, Va. (WUSA9) -- Prince William County police are searching for a man they say sexually assaulted a woman near a shopping center in Gainesville on Wednesday.

They say a 19-year-old woman was walking in the area of Route 29 and Gainesville Square Shopping Center between 9:45 PM and 10:00 PM Wednesday when a man approached her from behind. According to police, he then pushed her down an embankment and sexually assaulted her. Police tell us that she fought with him for several minutes and was eventually able to get away.

She screamed as she was climbing out of the embankment and someone nearby stopped to help her, according to police.

The attacker was last seen running into the woods near Route 29, say police. He was described as a Hispanic male between 25 and 35 years old, 5'6" tall with a muscular but thin build. He had short, dark crew-cut hair and no facial hair. The attacker was wearing a white shirt t-shirt or tank top and baggy jeans.

Police tell us he may have some injuries to face, shoulder and hands from the struggle with the victim. He was seen riding a bike in the area before the attack.
