(USA TODAY) -- The White House has released an official photo of the First Family, a fine portrait of the Obamas that is just as notable for the photographer who took it: Annie Leibovitz.
Leibovitz, an occasional presence in the White House press room, is one of the nation's great artists, a portraitist who has snapped iconic images of the modern age.
After joining Rolling Stone in 1970, Leibovitz quickly became the go-to photographer for musicians and actors. This memorable shot of John Lennon and Yoko Ono was taken the day Lennon was shot.
After moving to Vanity Fair in 1983, Leibovitz continued to produce memorable work: A pregnant (and naked) Demi Moore; Whoopi Goldberg in a bath tub filled with milk.
Earlier this year, she produced a gallery of work from the Obama White House.
More recently, Leibovitz has been in the news for financial problems. But those things pass; her art endures.
