BEDFORD, NY (The Journal News) - Town officials are pressing Donald Trump to take down the tent erected Tuesday by Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's people at Trump's Seven Springs property.
If the Bedouin-style tent is not taken down, the town will cite Seven Springs LLC with a building code violation, Town Attorney Joel Sachs said today.
"We have been in touch with representatives of Trump to see whether he will utilize his good offices to persuade the individuals who put up the tent to dismantle it," Sachs said. "If that occurs, there is no need for the town to take legal action. But it does not appear to us that the Trump organization is prepared to do that."
Trump was not immediately available this morning to comment.
A showdown appeared set for later this morning, when Bedford officials will inspect Trump's Oregon Road property, on the borders of New Castle and North Castle.
Yesterday, Gadhafi's people set up a tent and small satellite dishes without obtaining a building permit and a special permit.
Gadhafi's plans were to entertain guests while he is in New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
He has already been denied permission to pitch a tent in Central Park and in Englewood, N.J.
Early this morning at the estate, the only sign of controversy was the red and white No Parking signs on both sides of Oregon Road.
That was in contrast to the scene in Manhattan, where a motorcade left the Libyan mission in midtown for the U.N. about 9:30 a.m. and was greeted with hundreds of protestors.
The protesters, some wearing T-shirts that read "Enough Gaddafi" chanted about civil rights violations in Libya. Another large group of pro-Libyans carried messages including "Long Live the King of Africa."
