GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WUSA) -- A cake designer was left with a five tiered wedding cake after a couple called the whole thing off the day before they were to tie the knot.
Clara Gold wanted to donate the cake to a deserving couple.
And after sorting through more than a hundred emails, she finally found the perfect pair.
Clara Gold asks the couple after they arrived at her business, "Are you ready to see your cake?"
Amy Browning and Court Bache are the winning couple.
Gold tells the couple, "Come on in!"
Browning says, "Oh it's beautiful I love it. It's amazing. Wow!"
Gold tells the couple, "This cake is designed especially for you and no one else has this design."
Up until Thursday night, the lemon pound cake was a blank slate stuck in Clara's freezer.
Says Gold, "I started at 6 p.m. and finished at 2 a.m. and it was worth every minute."
Says Browning, "It's more than I thought it would be"
Gold had alerted 9NewsNow two weeks ago that a couple expected to walk down the aisle called it quits because of irreconcilable differences. She said she was donating the 15 hundred dollar cake. After 9NewsNow aired the story on August 28th, viewers responded.
Gold sifted through dozens of emails and answered many calls. She says some of the stories were heartwarming, sad and also uplifting. She even thought about splitting up the cake. She had people who needed the cake the next day and some needed it months from now. But the timing of Saturday's wedding was a good fit.
Gold froze the cake and picked the Fredericksburg, Virginia couple. She says the fact that the couple had been dating for nine years and more important their baker backed out at the last minute she felt she found the perfect match.
Bache said, "So much goes on in planning a wedding all of a sudden we realized we may not have a cake so what do you do?"
Browning said, "It's amazing people care and she offered this."
The couple of nine years was strapped for cash for their big day without a cake.
Gold says with a smile, "After nine years how can you not win a contest?"
Gold knew she couldn't make everyone happy but she says at least she's made one couple's wedding day.
As Browning looks forward to her wedding day in 24 hours on Saturday night she says, "I'm more complete, I'm more ready now."
