STERLING, Va. (WUSA9) -- A man from Tanzania was sentenced recently for smuggling heroin into the Washington Dulles International Airport.
According to Customs and Border Protection officials, 40-year-old Omar Mohammad Omar of Pemba, Tanzania, was sentenced on April 26 to 48 months of incarceration for the illegal importation of a controlled substance.
Omar was arrested on October 3, 2012 after officers discovered about seven pounds of heroin in the lining of his suitcase. Officers noticed the luggage was unusually heavy even though it was emptied of its contents, according to court documents. An x-ray then revealed anomalies on both sides of the suitcase and officers probed the lining. Officers found four packages containing a brown, powdery substance. A sample field-tested positive for heroin.
Omar pleaded guilty to charges on February 7.
