(WUSA) - Paper or plastic? Metro is pushing riders to use their plastic SmarTrip cards by charging paper card users more.
Paper card riders will see a surcharge jump from 25 cents to $1 starting on July 1. The price hike marks one of Metro's highest fare increases.
Metro hopes that riders will switch to their $5 SmarTrip cards that are cheaper and easier for the transit agency to maintain.
10 percent of rail users still use paper fare cards. But, Metro will offer $3 rebates on SmarTrip cards to lower the price.
