FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (WUSA) -- Today, May 8, 2012 marks the sixth anniversary of the day an armed gunman shot two Fairfax County Police Department officers in the parking lot of the Sully District Police Station on Stonecroft Boulevard.
Det. Vicky Armel, 40, was shot and killed on May 8, 2006 as she confronted the suspect while MPO Mike Garbarino, 53, was critically injured that day before dying on May 17.
After carjacking a van moments earlier, the suspect drove to the police station and subsequently opened fire with a rifle on the officers who were in the parking lot during a shift change.The shots struck Armel and Garbarino. Both victims were flown to Fairfax Inova Hospital where Detective Armel succumbed to her wounds. Garbarino was critically injured and died on May 17.
The suspect was shot and killed by return gunfire in the police department's parking lot.Detective Armel had served with the Fairfax County Police Department for 9 years. She was survived by her husband, son, and daughter.
