CULPEPER, Va. (AP) -- Five Culpeper County sheriff's deputies have been fired following allegations that one repeatedly slapped a restrained inmate at the jail.
Sheriff Jim Branch announced the firings Monday in a statement. Branch said his office has reviewed the incident with the FBI and prosecutors. He didn't provide any other details, citing personnel issues.
Charlie Manuel tells media outlets that he was among the deputies who were fired. He claims he was dismissed in retaliation for reporting the Aug. 12 incident to Branch and then going public. He says he and the other fired deputies are scheduled to meet with the FBI on Thursday.
