Va. gov signs bill for daycare worker background checks

BURKE, Va. (WUSA9) -- Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe signed a bill into law requiring criminal background checks for daycare workers on Wednesday.

The signing of HB412 took place at the Kiddie Country Daycare in Burke.

WUSA9's Peggy Fox was at the signing and will have more on how Virginia is taking a step toward mandatory fingerprint background checks at 5 p.m.

Only Virginia and Kentucky do not have mandatory fingerprint checks for childcare providers.

Tonight, watch Fox talk to a mother whose baby died at a home daycare two years ago after the daycare provider had changed her name and her past crimes did not come up in the criminal background check. The crimes would have come up had she been required to do a fingerprint check.
