The Letters Project: Helping parents cope with addiction

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA9)--The disease of addiction impacts millions of American families. Tonight, we unveil what we call The Letters Project--the idea of one of our viewers who found it "freeing" to put her anguish over her son's addiction into words.

As Andrea McCarren reports, she encouraged other addicts' Moms to do the same.

"We need to make sure that this stigma is dropped," said Carin Miller, whose son is struggling with an addiction to heroin.

We made a place for her gut-wrenching letter and others on our website, and we encouraged Moms worldwide to share their stories.

"It helps me to release some of my feelings onto paper and then I can somehow have some inner peace within me," she said.

The letters poured in… via email and snail mail. Mothers realized they were not alone in their despair.

"It's freeing, and it gave me more strength to continue on with what I had intended, and that was to bring awareness to this disease," said Miller.

We will keep collecting your letters and sharing them online here at You can email them to Andrea ( with your first name and hometown, and we'll post them under The Letters Project.
