Suspicious item cleared; Middletown schools lockdown lifted

MIDDLETOWN, Md. (WUSA9) -- The Frederick County Sheriff's Office says the small, metal, suspicious item that was found near a driveway on Green Street in Middletown, Md. is not a threat.

The object was found at approximately 9:35 a.m. Friday, according to sheriff's office authorities. The area was cordoned off while the state fire marshal examined the object.

Sheriff's office officials told staff at Middletown schools about the investigation and Frederick County Public Schools placed the campus on lockdown as a precaution. Officials said the item was "a considerable distance away from the school buildings and does not present any danger to the staff or students."

At 11:25 a.m., sheriff's office authorities said that the suspicious object was not a threat and that they were in the process of notifying school officials about lifting the lockdown.
