Suspects wanted after checks stolen, deposited in fake account

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WUSA9) -- Montgomery County Police are looking for two suspects in a mail theft and check fraud incident that occurred in August 2013. They have released photos and are asking for your help in identifying the suspects.

Police say on August 9, 2013, officers responded to the 20200 block of Darlington Road in Gaithersburg for a report of check fraud. According to police, the victim wrote two checks to the Maryland Prepaid College Fund for more than $80,000 then placed them in the mailbox.

The checks were taken from the mailbox, say police. The victim was later notified that the checks had not reached the college fund company.

Detectives then determined that the checks were deposited into a fake bank account, in the name of Maryland College Fund, which was established by the suspects. The suspects then withdrew the funds from the account.

Detectives were able to obtain surveillance photos of the suspects from the bank at which the checks were deposited (see above).

Anyone with information regarding the identity of the suspects is asked to call the Financial Crimes Section at 240-773-6330 or Crime Solvers of Montgomery County at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). Tipsters will remain anonymous.
