Relatives plead for justice in beating of American teen

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Local relatives of a Maryland-born American teenager beaten badly by Israeli police are pleading for a fair peace for all, even as violence escalated in Gaza and Israel.

It's gone from rocks and tear gas, to Hamas missiles, and what may be a long Israeli offensive in Gaza.

In Washington, relatives of 15-year-old Tariq Abu Khadeir, who was kicked and stomped by Israeli police, and of Muhammed Abu Khadeir, who was abducted and burned to death, pleaded for justice.

"We need to love each other. We're all human. We're all God's children. And when we recognize that, this will be over," said Maria Baroody of Baltimore, whose husband is Tariq's first cousin.

Her words were echoed by the mother of one of three Israeli teens abducted and killed last month. "No mother or father should go through what we're going through now. We share the pain of the parents of Mohammad Abu Khadeir.

The US State Department urged Israel to conduct a speedy, transparent, and credible investigation into the beating of Tariq Abu Khadeir, who is an American citizen.

However the Israeli Ambassador suggested 15-year-old Tariq is not simply an innocent bystander. "He was with six other people. They were masked. They threw petrol bombs and Molotov cocktails at our police," Ron Dermer told Fox News Sunday.

Tariq denied that and Baroody says he didn't even have a slingshot.

She described the pain hearing about the murder of Mohammad, of watching the video of Tariq's beating and seeing the images of his battered face. "Sickening horror that anyone could do this. That one human being could do this to another. Horror." "And to the three Israeli teens?" I asked her. "Horror."

Relatives say one of their top priorities now is preventing the deaths of more children, but at this point the violence in Israel and Gaza only seems to be getting worse.

The Mayor of Jerusalem says if police used excessive force on Tariq, they will face charges.

However he says protestors who threw stones will also face charges.

Tariq right now remains on a ten day house arrest.
