Recount underway in Va. attorney general race

FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA9) -- The process of one of the most extensive recounts in modern Virginia history has begun.

The State Board of Elections officials are counting votes from Fairfax County and the cities of Alexandria and Chesapeake.

Teams of democrats and republicans hustled into the Fairfax County courthouse early Monday morning.

"It's going to be a very long three days in Fairfax. But as long as both teams play by the rules we'll be in good shape," saidDiane Cullo.

They realize the important responsibility. Their work will help determine who wins Virginia's Attorney General's race.

"It's a long process and an important one. I want to make sure there are enough people and volunteers. I thank them for their work. It's a big commitment and we want to make sure each ballot is counted correctly," said Fairfax County Republican Committee ChairmanJay McConville.

The process?

"Carefully go through every ballot look at every one there's an observer from each side as well as a counter going from each side," saidRecount Officer Allan Ruppar.

One hundred sixty five votes separate the two candidates, Democrat Mark Herring and Republican Mark Obenshain. Herring has the razor thin edge over his opponent.

"It's the closest ever in Virginia when you think about 165 votes out of 2.2 million plus. It was a good race. We're hoping a positive result for our republican," saidMcConville.

Fairfax County, the City of Alexandria and Chesapeake get the head start because of population and the number of hand ballots that need to be counted. Then the recount moves to every jurisdiction in the Commonwealth.

Every part of this process will be scrutinized.

The teams will work from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. everyday for the next three days. Wednesday they will have a deadline of 11:59 p.m. By the end of the week we should know who the next attorney general will be in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
