Laborers Union endorses Mayor Gray

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The Laborers' International Union of North America Mid-Atlantic Region has endorsed D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray for reelection.

"Mayor Gray has demonstrated a strong commitment to working families by bringing good jobs to D.C. residents. Mayor Gray understands that the only way for D.C. to have a vibrant middle class is for business and labor to work together to bring good jobs and economic development to the District," said Dennis L. Martire, LiUNA Vice-President and Regional Manager.

The union has over 40,000 members who work in building construction, environmental remediation, heavy and highway construction, as well as industrial manufacturing, service work and a variety of public sector jobs.

Mayor Gray has been endorsed by three other unions, SEIU, AFSCME and UNITE HERE.

The Washington Post is not backing Mayor Gray, citing the federal investigation into his 2010 campain. Friday, the Post endorsed D.C. Councilmember Muriel Bowser in the city's Democratic mayoral primary.

The Democratic primary election for mayor is April 1, 2014.
