Jennifer Wexton wins VA's 33rd Senate District race

WASHINGTON (WUSA9)-- Democrat Jennifer Wexton won Tuesday's special election for Virginia's 33rd Senate District, which includes portions of Fairfax and Loudoun Counties.

Wexton got 53 percent of the vote. Republican John Whitbeck earned 37 percent, and Independent Joe May got 10 percent of the votes.

Wexton will serve the remainder of Attorney General Mark Herring's Senate term.

Wexton's win means the state senate is evenly split between Democrats and Republicans as long as democrat Lynwood Lewis wins a recount for Virginia's 6th Senate District. The recount is slated to happen on Monday, January 27. Any tie votes in the upper chamber are broken by the Lieutenant Governor. In this case, Ralph Northam, who is a Democrat.
