Virginia Primary: 2017 Voter's Guide

Voters will head to the polls to select a Republican and Democratic nominee in the closely watched Governor's race.

WASHINGTON (WUSA*9)---Virginians will be heading to the polls on Tuesday, June 13th to pick democratic and republican nominees for the offices of Governor, Lieutenant Governor, several House of Delegate seats and some contested local races.

Poll hours in the Commonwealth are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Virginia Governor: Democratic

Ralph Northam (D)
He is currently the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia and he served in the Virginia State Senate representing the 6th district which includes Virginia's eastern shore and parts of Norfolk and Virginia Beach.  Northam is a pediatric neurologist and from 1984 to 1992 he was a United States Army physician.  He served during the Gulf War and treated soldiers wounded during Desert Storm.  Northam was born and raised in Virginia.

Tom Perriello (D)
He is a former U.S. Congressman who served one term representing Virginia's 5th congressional district.  He narrowly defeated long-term congressman, Virgil Goode, in 2008 by 727 votes.  Perriello is also a former diplomat and in 2015 was appointed Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region of Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo.  He was born and raised in Charlottesville and now calls the Alexandria area home. website: https://www.tomforvirginia.com/

   

Virginia Governor: Republican

Edward Gillespie (R)
He is the former chair of the Republican National Committee.  He owns a bi-partisan lobbying firm.  He is once served as counselor to former President George W. Bush.  He was also an advisor for Mitt Romney's presidential campaign in 2012.

Corey Stewart (R)
He is currently At-Large Chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors.  He has served on the Board since 2003.  He has been chair since 2007.  He served as Virginia chairman of then candidate Donald Trump's presidential campaign in 2016.  He was removed from this position after participating in a protest in front of the RNC headquarters.

Frank Wagner (R)
He currently serves in the Virginia Senate and represents the 7th district which includes Virginia Beach and Norfolk.  He also served in the Virginia House of Delegates (1992-2001).  Wagner is a Naval Academy graduate with a degree in Ocean Engineering.  His professional background includes starting ship repairing and manufacturing businesses.  Wagner was born and raised in Virginia.

Virginia Lt. Governor: Democratic

Justin Fairfax (D)
This is Fairfax's second run for statewide office in Virginia.  He ran for attorney general in 2013, narrowly losing in the Democratic primary to Mark Herring.  He is an attorney working in Tysons Corner. He also served as an assistant United States Attorney. He grew up in Washington and calls Annandale home.

Gene Rossi (D)
He is a former federal prosecutor and had a long career with the United States Justice Department where he worked as a Senior Trial Attorney in the Department's Tax Division, where he also prosecuted organized crime drug enforcement cases. This is his first run at political office. He lives in Alexandria.

Susan Platt (D)
She is a longtime Democratic activist. She was Chief of Staff for Vice President Joe Biden's Senate office. She also served as campaign manager for U.S. Senator Charles Robb in 1994. She served on the Virginia Tourism Corporation Board and served on the board of NARAL Virginia.  In 2013 she was appointed as a Board Member of the Bi-Partisan Election Process Improvement Commission of Fairfax County, which came up with recommendations to make voting more secure and simpler.  This is the first time she has run for polticial office. Virginia Lt. Governor: Republican

Bryce Reeves (R)
He serves in the Virginia State Senate representing Spotsylvania. He currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Rehabilitation and Social Services.  He served in the United States Army and served as an Airborne Ranger in the Infantry. After leaving the Army he worked as a police officer and a detective in the Vice-Narcotics Unit for Prince William County.  He is now a small businessman.

Glenn Davis, Jr. (R)
He serves in the Virginia House of Delegates representing the Virginia Beach area. He serves on the Education and Transportation Committees and the Militia Police and Public Safety Committee.  He is also Chairman of the Joint Commission on Technology and Science Subcommittee on Cyber security and a member of the Business Development Caucus and the Virginia Tourism Caucus.

Jill Vogel (R)
She serves in the Virginia State Senate representing Fauquier County, Clarke County, Frederick County, parts of Loudoun County, Culpeper and Stafford Counties, as well as the City of Winchester.   In 2012 she was a sponsor of a bill that would have required a mandatory transvaginal ultrasound for women seeking abortions. She is an attorney and served as Deputy General Counsel at the Department of Energy, before starting her own law firm.

Jennifer Carroll Foy (D)
She is currently a public defender and adjunct professor at Northern Virginia Community College.

Mansimran Singh Kahlon (D)
He is a local business owner who owns a trucking company. He has served as chairman of the Brenstville Magisterial Democratic Committee and has been a member of the Prince William County's Democratic Committee.

Danica Roem (D)
She has worked as a journalist and news editor.  She covered education policy and local politics. She is also the first transgender person to run for the Virginia House of Delegates.

Steven Jansen (D)
He is an attorney and a former Detroit-area prosecutor.  He also served as director of the Lake Manassas Home Owners Association and director of the National Center for Community Prosecution.

Andrew Adams (D)
He served as an active duty officer with the U.S. Army for 7 years (2010-2017) and was deployed to Afghanistan and Kuwait.  He is an operations manager at a pest control company.

Worked as a police officer in Arlington County and Prince William County before becoming a member in the Virginia House of Delegates in 2006. In 2011 he was elected Majority Whip. He's a real estate investor and is a realtor for Prince William Association of Realtors.

Harry Parrish, II (R)
Currently serves as the Mayor of Manassas, Virginia when he was elected in 2008. As a lifelong resident of Manassas City, he was appointed to the City Council in 1993. He was elected into the Council in 1996, 2000, and again in 2004. Before he came mayor, he was elected Vice Mayor in 1999. Before he got into politics, Harry 'Hal' was Second Lieutenant in the Air Force serving from 1973 to 1978.

Robert Orrock (R-incumbent)
He has been a public-school teacher at Spotsylvania High School for over three decades. He was first elected in to the 54th Virginia House of Delegates district in 1989. He is also an EMT and a part-time radio announcer for WFLS radio in Fredericksburg.
