ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA) -- You might expect a celebration to be going on at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology after being ranked at the top of the U.S. News and World Report list of Best High Schools.
Nothing but work going on there Friday, even during lunchtime. These kids are mostly busy reading and going over their work. Maybe that's why they're numero uno.
The magazine's analysis considered more than 18,000 high schools in 40 states. DC was not considered.
Junior Molly Patterson, who absolutely loves her math class and loves to zip through her homework, thinks the reason they've hit the top spot is because the bar keeps being raised higher and higher. She says every new class is trying harder and harder to get into T.J., and that makes them all work harder.
Principal Evan Glazer sees his kids as the future leaders and innovators in America, those who will help solve the world's major problems.
If there is a downside to being number one, it may be for the future T.J. applicants. It's already so hard to get in T.J. This new title just may make it tougher. Last year, 2,800 students applied for just 450 freshman spots.
Glazer says that's a sign more emphasis needs to be placed on special schools and curriculum for kids who want to learn more science and math.
