Give Pitbulls A Chance

(WUSA) -- Some animal advocates say pit bulls get a bad rap. They're are banned by some communities, and others just don't want them around. Some say give pits a chance. Most -- if violent -- were bred to be that way.

Rescue organizations like Good Dog Rescue of Arlington help to place pit bulls in loving homes. They've rescued 75 of the dogs in the past year and a half. Most of them were abused.

Theresa Caton of Good Dog says pit bulls can be the sweet, kind dogs. And, even the ones who are mistreated can be forgiving. Take Lily, she was once a bait dog in a dog fighting ring. Now, she's been rescued, and she's a happy, playful dog in a loving home.

Other dogs aren't so lucky. Caton has rescued other dogs who died as a result of their injuries. Pit bulls, Caton says, can be great pets. And she says most people don't know that they are the only breed of dog bred specifically to not be aggressive towards humans. Even Helen Keller had a pit bull for as a companion.

Caton hopes more people will feel sympathy for what some of the dogs endure in the wrong hands, and consider giving a dog -- without a dog fighting background, a loving home. In most cases, dogs that are rescued from dog fighting rings still don't end up better off. They are often too violent to place in other homes and end up euthanized.
