(WUSA) -- You could call it people power.
What began last week as an online petition to repeal Virginia's new "abuser fees" law has added thousands of new signatures.
By Thursday night, over 28,000 people had signed the petition urging the state to rethink the law. Critics say it's unfair because it only affects Virginia drivers and not those from out-of-state. They also say it's simply meant to generate revenue as opposed to helping promote public safety.

The new law charges violators hundreds of dollars in fees which are spread out over a three year period. The fees increase depending on the offense. The creator of the petition says he will e-mail all the signatures to members of the legislature by next week.
