WOODBRIDGE, Va. (AP) -- Virginia Railway Express has removed metal gates from a pedestrian bridge after vandals trapped commuters this week.

The gates at the Rippon station in Woodbridge hadn't been closed in years. But on Monday afternoon, vandals closed them with a U-shaped lock. About 40 people who got off the train found they couldn't get out. They had to wait about 20 minutes for authorities to get the lock off.

VRE workers removed the gates with a blowtorch yesterday to prevent a repeat of the incident. The gates were originally put there to keep vandals out of the station.
