(WUSA) -- Companies will pull out all the stops to get you through their front door. However, to save money, you need to enter through the side door: coupon/rebate portal sites.
Janice Tolley saved $25 on a comforter after finding a coupon for it on couponcabin.com.
Right now the site is loaded with coupons for Valentine's Day flowers and gifts.
"They have it in categories," says Tolley. "Right now you can do printable coupons or go straight to the website and they have links to take you right to the discount. It's great."
Since retailers save the best coupons for loyal customers, sign up for their email.
Another hint, always compare coupons to offers of free shipping.
"If you're going to get free shipping or save $5, most people would be better off getting free shipping," says Ellen Davis with the National Retail Federation.
9NEWS NOW's Audrey Barnes says another side door to savings is a rebate portal. A free website that has a deal with retailers to send internet shoppers their way.
You can start at a portal site like fatwallet.com, ebates.com or quickrewards.net. Then click through to the retailer you want.
