Meet the Schaffers. Kevin, an IT professional, his wife, Athena, a writer for Gothic Beauty magazine, and son Collin.

They're also witches -- members of the Wiccan religion. And their beliefs, this family of witches says, are not about black magic. It's a way of life.

"Most of our spellcasting is for things like prosperity, for love, for healing, ahh, even for communications. If you haven't heard from somebody, you light a yellow candle," Athena Schaffer says.

This high priest and priestess say they practice witchcraft to make a spiritual connection to many gods and goddess for the purposes of good, not evil.

"People always fear what they don't understand. And because we have secrets which we keep to ourselves which are our rituals, our spells. And our spells, which in Catholicism or Christianity would be called prayers, we just do it in a more ritualistic fashion."

The kitchen table doubles as their alter. Flames flicker from colorful candles that represent the earth, water, fire and air.

"We will then cast a circle which the casting of the circle is like casting a cone of power, and that space, technically, is outside of normal time and space.", says Kevin Schaffer. "Today we're going to call upon the gods to protect those who serve our country."
