BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- Wal-Mart is adding Virginia and eleven other states to the list offering more than 300 generic drug prescriptions for $4 each. That means the program now applies to a total of 27 states. The world's largest retailer had said originally that it planned to expand the program next year, but says customer demand was so strong, it opted to move more quickly. More than 1,000 stores are being added today in Alabama, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio, South Dakota and Virginia.
In a comparable move, the Wegmans Food Markets supermarket chain says its pharmacies will begin selling almost 100 generic prescription drugs at a sharp discount. Starting today the prescriptions will sell for $11.99 for a three-month supply. Wegmans says some drugs on the list previously sold for twice as much or more. Wegmans operates 71 stores in five states, including Virginia and Maryland.
