WASHINGTON (AP) - Magic Johnson came to Washington on Thursday, urging high school students and others to get tested for AIDS and to get treatment if they have HIV.
The former NBA star's career ended abruptly in 1991 after a routine blood test revealed that he has HIV. Now he's become what he calls "the face of the disease," and he's using that status to raise awareness.
Johnson's visit is part of a ten-city tour focused on HIV and AIDS among blacks, and it comes amid a DC campaign to test residents from 14 to 84.
Johnson says he had the same mindset that teenagers have about sex before learning that sleeping around changed his life. He warned the audience that HIV is running through the community and sex among teenagers on the rise.
