The University of Maryland is noting an anniversary this week they would just as soon forget.
Five years ago on September 24, a tornado hit campus. Two sisters, Colleen and Erin Marlatt, had just been visiting there dad there. They were killed. And the damage was extensive. Some parts of campus still show scars from that day.
The University now has an emergency warning system in place to try and prevent tragedies in the future.
Three 128-decibel sirens are part of it. They also have an instant notification system for students, staff, and visitors. And the good news is, it's not just a weather alert system. They can use it for other emergencies like terrorist attacks and crime.
The school is one of 14 college campuses nationwide now using the early warning system.
