Tai Shan and mom, Mei Xiang, explored the new areas of their outdoor home for the first time Friday.
At new and improved Giant Panda Habitat, there are new yards and transfer chutes, new tunnels and doors and a big, elevated walkway to the bamboo storage shed.
The habitat is the gateway to Asia Trail, a new exhibit at the National Zoo that opens to the public on Oct. 17 and features six additional species: sloth bears, clouded leopards, fishing cats, red pandas, Japanese giant salamanders, and Asian small-clawed otters.
Tickets are no longer needed to see Tai Shan and his family, but if the pandas go inside, you won't be able to see them because the indoor exhibit is closed unti lthe Asia Trail opens.
