WASHINGTON - Police in the District have purchased more than 300 weapons as part of Saturday's weapons buyback.

Sergeant Joe Gentile says 337 weapons were collected Saturday at three locations, for which the department paid $16,700.

The police department paid $100 for assault weapons and automatic or semiautomatic pistols; $50 for revolvers, Derringers, rifles and shotguns; and $10 for BB or pellet guns.

Residents of the District, as well as Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland, and Arlington and Alexandria in Virginia, were eligible to participate.

Similar programs from in 1999 and 2000 resulted in the recovery of more than 6200 firearms.
