Thousands of people come to Washington each year to visit the memorials - especially those honoring the military. All branches are represented except one - the Air Force! But that is about to change.
It is a memorial in progress, a place to remember the history of the U.S. Air Force. Three spires soar into the sky above Arlington as stainless steel structures of different heights give the impression of flight.
The memorial, which cost more than $30-milion, was designed by architect James Freed. The Centex construction crews perform high wire feats as they build the spires on top of a foundation 40 feet deep. The ball and box devices that add stability are inside openings near the top of the spires.
The spires underneath the blue wrapping pay tribute to all who have served in Air Force - in the skies, on the ground, on peace missions and in wars.
Sgt. Paula Newman served in Iraq providing escort in gun trucks. She got the chance to inscribe her name inside one of the spires.
The names of Medal of Honor recipients are listed on black granite walls and inscriptions will line the plaza. Inscriptions meant to inspire line the plaza. And then there is the view. It?s a place to reflect and celebrate that the Air Force can call its own.
