Tuesday's wet weather didn't deter thousands of tourists and Washingtonians from gathering on the National Mall for A Capitol Fourth. The crowd enjoyed music from artists like Stevie Wonder and the National Symphony Orchestra and the night's festivities were topped off by a spectacular fireworks display.

The weather may have kept some people away from the fireworks in the Capital Tuesday. Strong wind and rain rolled through, pounding the National Mall. Things looked a bit dicey for a while, as people tried to deal with all the nasty weather. But the crowds held out, putting up with tight security, and the fireworks show went off as planned.

People came from all over the country and the DC area to be a part of this Washington tradition.

The National Symphony Orchestra entertained the crowds with the traditional out-door concert of patriotic music, finishing the show with the "18-12 Overture" and live cannon fire.

Capital Police say the process of getting thousands of people out of the District went pretty well. Massive crowds began leaving the National Mall after the fireworks show. Police closed streets to let people leave downtown. Then they used an emergency traffic system to help the massive crowd clear out of the city quickly.

Police also made a few arrests last night and several people went to the hospital because of the heat.

Two were arrested for disrupting the parade. Police arrested three others for drugs and one person was arrested for pick-pocketing.

Paramedics treated 300 people for heat-related problems and they had to take a dozen of them to the hospital.
