Handwriting? What's That?

When's the last time you wrote a letter by hand?

They are everywhere, computers in classrooms, in homes, offices and on the street. Everyday, people say they push more buttons than pens and pencils.

Handwriting in school or elsewhere for that matter certainly isn't what it used to be, but is it going away?

Jan Olsen started ?Handwriting Without Tears? as a curriculum for schools which she says are often leaving out the writing in reading, writing and 'rythmetic.

It began in the 1970s as way to help her young son learn to write. Now it?s an international, award-winning business.

Why should parents be concerned about their children's handwriting? Handwriting is such a basic life skill and particularly in the younger grades a lot of the work they do is from worksheets. If a child has trouble getting that down, they don't do as well academically, don't finish their work. Jan Olsen started with one book and now has this set of books, the difference in her method of teaching is having the student copy each letter the right way, instead of starting with one letter then copying it down along the line. Think you can get away with poor handwriting as you get older? High school students beware, the new SAT has an essay test component where students must write by hand. Of course someone else has to read it for it to be graded.
