Are illegal immigrants stealing jobs from African Americans? That's the claim of a new group called Choose Black America. And it's steeped in controversy.
Choose Black America is literally wrapping itself in the flag. And it says it's bad for poor African American communities to offer any path to citizenship for immigrants in the country illegally.
The group of largely conservative activists from LA was flown into DC by the FAIR, the Federation for American Immigration Reform, which is battling the President's plan for immigration reform. The organization claims its African Americans who bear the brunt of the influx of millions of illegal aliens. But not a single elected African American official attended the event... And the NAACP, the nation's largest black civil rights group, says immigration reform should focus on humanitarian values, not border enforcement. Latino leaders argue poor immigrants and poor African Americans would be better off working together.
The main African American leaders are rallying behind and unifying their forces with the immigrant communities because we see this as an opportunity to address all our communities.
But Choose Black America says traditional black leaders are failing to deal with what it calls the biggest threat to their communities.
Al Wynn, a Prince George's County Congressman, calls the group's claims ridiculous. But he admits there is concern in among many of his constituents that undocumented workers have allowed employers to lower wages for everyone. Wynn says the best way to deal with that is reform that gives immigrants a chance to earn the right to stay here. With documents, and the fear of deportation lifted, they'll be able to push for higher wages.
