It's not easy being green. But one Northwest Washington school is working to do just that.

In late August, Sidwell Friends will open a brand new middle school facility. And they hope their "new" green building will change classrooms and communities.

There is an old Quaker expression -- to let your life speak. At Sidwell Friends, a private school guided by Quaker principles, they now say let your building speak.

"It's extraordinary to think that we can have the opportunity to change things for the better."

Headmaster Bruce Stewart says when it was time to make physical changes to the school?s landscape -- they decided to go green.

"This is absolutely intended to be a paradigm shifting experience. Sidwell Friends School hopes and believes that this will shift the way children are educated across this nation and around the world."

Sidwell is seeking a LEED platinum rating for it's new school. That's the industry standard for green building design.

And Sidwell hopes that all of it's buildings on it's DC and Bethesda campuses will meet some kind of green standard in the next decade.
