Friends, colleagues and supporters of fallen Fairfax County detective Vicky Armel packed the church and lined the streets Saturday to pay tribute to a woman being remembered as a hero.
Thousands turned out for her funeral service at McLean Bible Church in Vienna, with her fellow Fairfax County officers leading the crowd into the church behind Armel's flag-draped casket.
Armel, who was shot and killed earlier this week in the parking lot of the Sully District Police Station in Chantilly, was remembered as a "protector" and someone who helped prevent a greater tragedy.
Helicopters flew overhead and dozens of police motorcycles from across the region were part of the procession that took nearly an hour to completely pass the station where a cruiser has been draped with flowers and notes in honor of Armel.
Crowds along the side of the road applauded, saluted and cried as the procession passed.
Armel was buried at a private service in Warrenton.
