Growing up, Kimberly Oliver knew she wanted to end up beside children reading to them, teaching them. Now, after just 6 years on the job, she was chosen as the top teacher. First in Montgomery County. Then in Maryland. Now, top in the country.
In 2000, Kim was a new teacher not looking for the easy way out. She wanted to go into a troubled school. Broad Acres was the lowest performing school in the county. The state had plans to take it over. However, the principal, other teachers, and Kim turned the school around.
"I accepted the challenge of teaching at Broad Acres and I think i'm a better teacher for it." The National Teacher of the Year Award is the oldest and most prestigious honor for American teachers.
Dr. Jerry Weast says, "We think Kimberly embodies all that is good about teaching and learning."
In her first years of teaching, Kim quickly rose to team leader. The reform at Broad Acres took hours of extra work, talking with parents, and a strong commitment to students.
Kimberly will spend the next year traveling across the nation and the world representing U.S. teachers.
Kim will receive her prestigious honor from President Bush at the White House Wednesday.
