A DC police officer killed in a car crash Thursday night had just called in to check on a possible stolen vehicle when he died.
Police spokesman Joe Gentile says Police Chief Charles Ramsey has reviewed a 911 tape from Sergeant Gerard Burke Junior and determined he died in the line of duty.
Burke was off duty when he lost control of his SUV on 11 Street, Northwest. It crossed the center line, hit a parked car, then spun around and hit another moving car. The driver of that car walked away from the accident.
Police say they've determined Burke died of a ruptured aorta.
